"Chocolate" Pearls

Everyone loves em’- and for great reason- those beautiful brown baubles playfully referred to as “chocolate” pearls. There has been much discussion lately about these fashion powerhouses, but the jury is still out on what techniques pearl producers are using to create that color which occurs so rarely in nature. Ultimately, it comes down to who you buy your pearls from and the assurances and disclosures that company is willing to make on behalf of the pearls they are selling.

So with that in mind, it is generally agreed that all Chinese Freshwater Pearls of the chocolate color are treated and dyed. We do not know exactly the processes being used, but do know that typically the quality of this treated product is always of a commercial nature with no assurance of stability of color over the long run or disclosure of techniques by the suppliers.

As far as the Tahitian Cultured Pearl is concerned, there are several things going on with this product. It has been determined by the Gemological Institute of America that there are Tahitian Cultured Pearls being offered on the market in colors other than "chocolate", and they too show signs of bleaching. Gems & Gemology, Summer 2008 So, be sure to know your pearl dealer to be assured that all treatments are being disclosed.

Other suspected treatments include dying, sodium nitrate and possibly a combination of several  techniques. These techniques are historically typical treatments for SOME pearls, and, when performed by qualified handlers from reputable, experienced sources, these Tahitian Cultured “Chocolate” Pearls are believed to be quite stable and will keep their beautiful color and tone for many years to come. Remember, they ARE Tahitian Cultured Pearls, after all!

Less fortunate children:

We are committed to helping make the lives of less fortunate children a focus of our ever-expanding philanthropic work, because, “They Are Our Future”. “Tahiti” has been personally involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northern Arizona for over 22 years. Because of the focus on mentoring and its resulting high success rate, we feel the work BB/BS does and the lasting, positive impact on the children they serve is second to none.

We hope to soon locate and support a “mirror” organization chartered to provide the same excellent programs to the children of Tahiti, French Polynesia and the surrounding Islands. We hope to help encourage these indigenous children to become a part of the pearl culturing industry as a way to become successful members of their own culture, and the world.

Building Community:

Everyone who is a part of the Gem Marketing team, including our customers, is encouraged to put their “philanthropic” foot forward in the pursuit of making the world a better place for all of us.  In addition to the organizations linked below, the following represents other areas of interest to the employees and associates of Gem Marketing Pearls: coral reef preservation, indigenous culture preservation, political involvement on National and pearl industry issues, Permaculture and animal rescue efforts.
